History of the Forecast Competition
Clanna Gael GAA club introduced a forecast competition to mark the occasion of the 1947 All-Ireland final between Cavan and Kerry at the Polo Grounds in New York. Clanna Gael was founded in 1929 by a group of teachers in Dublin to provide a club for their members who were working in Dublin. In its first year of the Competition in 1947 the club because of its close affiliation with teachers distributed its forecast cards to the schools of Dublin. The competition has been run every year since with the schools from the all-Ireland finalists being added to the distribution list.
In those early years teacher Sean Òg Ò Siochain, former General Secretary of the GAA was Director of the Forecast Competition and many teachers since then have been involved in its running including former Leinster Council Chairman Liam O’Neill. Liam played for 10 years with the club whilst a teacher in Haddington Rd. Other famous players outside of Dublin who played with the club and some of who were involved in the running of the Forecast Competition were:
Danny Lynch present PRO of the GAA
Liam Griffin former Wexford Hurling Manager
Nicky Rackard, Wexford (actually played football with us)
Joe Stafford and Owen Roe McGovern both Cavan and All-Ireland winners in 1947 in New York.
Sean Purcell, Galway
Sean Brosnan, Kerry
Forecast Snippets
Ø In the 62 years to date the forecast score has not been forecast on two occasions only. That was in 2004 when Kerry beat Mayo on the score line of 1-20 to 2-9 and 2006 when Keery beat Mayo again on the score line of 4-15 to 3-5.
Ø On both of these occasions the prize money was donated to The National Children’s Hospital in Crumlin
Ø Each year €500.00 is donated to the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin 12.
Ø The checking of the cards is a source of amusement each year as some crazy forecasts are recorded such as a 0-1 to 0-1 draw to 80-29 to 79-26.
Ø Right up until All Ticket All-Ireland finals there was also a column to guess the correct attendance. This was also a source of amusement when checking cards.
Ø Also on that first Forecast Committee was teacher and then Secretary of the club Denis Gallagher from Achill in Co. Mayo who later became the first Minister of the Gaeltacht when appointed by Jack Lynch
